Who We Are

We are a friendly group of folks from many different walks of life who gather together to worship and serve God, to reach out in love and care to our community, and to support one another as we try our best to become faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. No matter who you are or what season of life you're in, you are welcome here.

Is this church part of a denomination?

Two denominations, actually! UMAB Church is a federated church, which basically means that our congregation is connected with both the United Methodist Church and the American Baptist Churches, USA. Members of our church can join as either United Methodists, American Baptists, or members of the federated United Methodist-American Baptist Church. If you're interested in the history of our church, you can find more information here.

Is everyone at the church Methodist or Baptist?

Nope. Our church is open to people from different faith backgrounds. You do not need to be a member of our church, a Methodist or a Baptist to worship or even to receive communion at UMAB Church.

What are your Sunday services like?

Our Sunday morning worship service is at 10:00. The service lasts about an hour, and it is a blend of old traditions and new. When you arrive, you will be greeted by our friendly ushers who will give you a bulletin to guide you through all the stuff we'll be doing in the service. Feel free to sit anywhere you'd like in the sanctuary. When the service has ended, you're invited to the Memorial Room down the hall from the sanctuary (just follow the crowd) for coffee, lemonade, and delicious snacks.

If I come on Sunday, what should I wear?

The folks who regularly attend our church wear everything from dresses and heels to shorts and sandals. Please feel free to wear whatever makes you most comfortable.

Who is your pastor?

His name is John H. Duckworth.   He is an American Baptist Pastor who is serving as an interim pastor while the church makes a call for a new American Baptist Pastor.

Are children welcome at UMABC?

Absolutely! Children are loved and nurtured here. As a congregation, we feel it is part of our commitment to help them grow and learn in their faith - including learning how to worship. During the worship service, we have a Moment with Young Disciples (children's sermon) when the kids have special time to chat with the pastor at the front of the church. There are "Kid's Worship Packs" (with a special bulletin for the children, crayons and paper to draw on) available at the Welcome Center just outside the sanctuary. Just ask an usher when you walk in and they can show you where they are. If you are new to worshiping with young children, here are some tips and information.

What are your church's practices regarding communion?

At UMAB Church we have an Open Table, which means that everyone without exception is invited to participate in the sacrament of Holy Communion. We believe that the table is Christ's table, and so all people who seek to be united with Christ are welcome to receive the bread and cup. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of every month in our congregation.
